LEARN HOW TO USE BIBLE TOOLS
When studying the bible using any of the above sites, software, or apps, you will sometimes use tools they provide. Below are a list of the main tools and some of the more common versions of those tools.
This is probably the most useful tool in Bible study. Commentaries are written by church leaders from past and present to describe the scriptures you are reading by chapter and verse. There are probably 100 commentaries, but some of the more common and well known commentaries are:
Matthew Henry
Jamieson, Fausset, & Brown
John MacArthur
These are very useful as well, because rather than focusing on a chapter or verse, these focus on a word or a name or a topic. For example: when I was reading the bible and came across the word Sepharvaim I looked it up on the Blue Letter sites encyclopedia/dictionary. If you click the link you will see its possible meaning and definition from some of the more popular encyclopedias/dictionaries all on one page. Some of those are:
Easton’s Bible Dictionary
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
Nave’s Topical Bible
Smith’s Bible Dictionary
These are used for word studies and can be super useful when researching original meanings of a word in its original language Old Testament (Hebrew) or New Testament (Greek).
Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance is a very common one to use. Take a look at the example of Genesis 1:1 using Strong’s on the Bible Hub site.
One of the best places to use the various tools is on Blue Letters site.
Harmony of the Gospels – The Gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and they can be read side by side.
Charts and Timelines – these incredibly useful and help bring to life the scriptures.
Maps and Images – these are also very useful to give us a visual of the realness and locations of scriptures.
Topical Indexes – these are also really cool because you can look up a topic and it will show you all the scripture reference to that topic. A fantastic bible that use topical index is the Thompson’s Chain Reference Bible.
